The Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 for the International Exhibition of Paris. Created by bridge builder Gustave Eiffel, the controversial monument was chosen out of 700 proposals submitted in a design competition. Standing at an impressive 984 ft (300 m) high, the tower was once the tallest structure in the world.
